Club Private

There's not much to see now, but around the space where an underground parking lot entrance now exists, Club Private was on the top floor of the former Rideau Winter Club building at 227 Laurier.

A bathhouse on most nights, on Friday and Saturday nights it became a popular dance club for men only. The place picked up after 3am, when gay men returned from dancing in Gatineau but still wanted to party. There was a snack bar, but no liquor was served.

As stated in a 1972 article in the Ottawa Citizen, women were allowed in the space on Thursdays and Sundays.

This was the club's second location. Surprisingly, it was first located at 32 Elgin Street opposite to where the War Memorial now is.
